Nearly each grower we meet has hovered above a limp seedling thinking the same hushed thing: perhaps this is beyond me. Here is what a dozen years of minding neighbours’ plots has shown us — the distance between a “lost cause” and a charming one is rarely skill. It comes down to three modest, mendable slips.
1. Unsuitable plants for the corner
Sun seekers pout in gloom; gloom lovers scorch in glare. Stroll your plot at breakfast, midday and dusk for a single weekend and log where brightness genuinely lands. Then shift the strugglers — autumn suits best — or exchange them for kinds that call your setting ideal. Most “brown thumbs” are merely wrong postcodes.
2. Hungry, unfed earth
Good wishes alone never fatten a plant. A two-inch quilt of compost every spring, capped with mulch to cradle dampness, mends more ills than any shop-bought bottle. Soak thoroughly yet seldom, and roots will dive downward rather than wander.
3. Failures never cut away
A plot crowded with ailing specimens weighs on the keeper’s spirits. Be firm for an afternoon: compost the poorest performers, shorten the lanky middle, and grant the stalwarts space to glow. Plots — and their keepers — rally quickest from a fresh page plus one clear triumph.
Tackle one bed, one weekend, one victory. Then ring us if you fancy company — waking weary gardens is honestly our dearest work.
At a standstill out there?
A single hour-long revival call frequently turns the tide.
